Brandt wins
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) BONN, April 27. The West German Chancellor, Mr Willy Brandt, today survived by only two votes an Opposition attempt to depose him, in an unprecedented trial of strength in the Bonn Bungestag. A Christian Democratic motion of no-confidence in Mr Brandt and calling for his replacement by the Opposition leader, Dr Rainer Barzel, gained 248 votes in a secret ballot in the closely guarded Parliament building. This was two short of an absolute majority of 249 of the 496-member House needed for the motion to succeed.
The coalition parties had asked their members to abstain from voting, so that defectors would identify themselves when they went to cast their ballots. East and West German negotiators last night reached agreement in East Berlin on a general accord on traffic between the two States, the West German Government announced. A joint statement said the two negotiators, the State Secretary (Mr Egon Bahr) of the West German Chancellor’s Office and the East German State secretary (Mr Michael Kohl), successfully concluded their talks, opened last January.
