Shorelines research
The research on lake shorelines to be undertaken by Lincoln College and financed by Comalco, Ltd, rather smacked of a “fait accompli” as far as the raising of Lake Manapouri was concerned, the chairman of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society (Mr T. M. C. Hay) said yesterday.
It was announced on Wednesday that the re-establish-ment and stabilisation of lake shorelines, with special reference to Lake Manapouri, would be the subject of a major research project by Lincoln College. Mr Hay said it was a shrewd bit of propaganda as to the intentions of the company the Government, or both,’ as far as raising Lake Manapouri was concerned. However, it was wrong to embark on such a ■when the position regarding
the lake had not been resolved. '■ & Mr Hay said he understood ! it was intended to build a broad-base dam which would , control the level of the lake. But if a broad-base dam ’ was built this, in years to come, would be used to jusi tify increasing the height of i the dam on the grounds that ■ “we have the base of a dam ■ so why not make use of it?” s said Mr Hay. “Why build a broad-base > dam at all if at a later stage t it is not intended to take it asked Mr Hay.
