Japanese vessel’s brief call

The 7018-ton, Japanese motor vessel Port Louis Maru, well known at Lyttelton, made what might be described as a record brief visit for such a large overseas vessel yesterday. The Port Louis Maru, which is owned by Mitsui-O.SJK. Lines, discharged a very small cargo here, comprising SO Mitsubishi Galant cars.

At Auckland, she discharged 186 Japanese cars and a quantity of knocked-down-vehlcles, besides loading a large quantity of bone meal for Japan. At Lyttelttn she loaded no cargo, but at Tlrnaru, she will load lucerne pellets for Japan. Finally, at Tauranga, the Port Louis Maru will load bulk lead concentrates and drums of turpentine for Japan. At present in Japan there is a nationwide seaman’s strike, but vessels away from Japan, such as the Port Louis Maru, are not at present affected, an officer said. The Port Louis Mani spent only six hours and a half at Lyttelton and sailed for Tlmaru early yesterday afternoon. * ♦ *

Lyttelton has seen a spate of log carriers in recent months, and yesterday, another one—the five-year-old, Panamanian-regis-tered. Maritime Pioneer—arrived here from Nauru with 5000 tons of bulk phosphate for local discharge. Commanded by Captain Lo Kam Leung, the Maritime Pioneer has a total crew of 41. all of whom are Hong Kong Chinese. Owned by the Hilton Navigation Company of Panama, the Maritime Pioneer, which la comfortably appointed and modernly equipped, is managed by Industrial Maritime Carriers, Ltd. of Hong Kong. The IWll-ton motor-vessel win discharge the balance of her cargo at Dunedin and will then load logs at Tauranga for Korea. She was built in Japan. * # * ARRIVALS Maritime Pioneer (0 a.m.), 11,312, Capt. Lo Lam Leug, Nauru (Br. Phosphate (Cmmra.). (Bulk.)
