Hurdlers go well

Chilli Bean and Stormy King gave competent displays when E aired for a run over eight urdles at Riccarton yesterday. They started at a great rate, and although their pace had slackened slightly near the end they kept up a good standard of lumping. They will have opportunities to show their skill under racing conditions in Canterbury next month.

J. R. Shaw has been considering a North Island campaign for Chilli Bean and he, like other South Islanders, might find a scheme announced yesterday highly attractive. The secretary of the Wellington Racing Club, Mr H. W. Meyer, announced yesterday that the Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, and Manawatu clubs will promote their open hurdle races as a series -this winter with the object of improving their fields.

This year three ot those four races concerned will be run at Trentham because the Manawatu winter meeting will be staged there in June. In addition to gross stakes for the four races exceeding $13,000 runners will receive appearance money, which will mean that without earning any of the stakes a horse will be able to earn up to $2OO. For starting in one race two points will be awarded. A second start will earn four points, a third six points and a fourth eight points. Thus a runner contesting all four races will earn 20 points, and appearance money will be paid at the rate of $lO a point. The clubs also will have a points system to determine the top hurdler of the series. Each race will carry a total of 20 points—l2 for first, five for second, two for third, and one for fourth.

The owner of the winner of tliis competition will receive a trophy valued at $lOO, and awards of equal value will be presented to the leading rider and trainer over the four races. Jockeys and trainers will receive four points for a win. two for a second, and one for a third.
