As part of the reorganisation of the Department of Agriculture to meet increasing demands in standards of animal health and inves- . tigations of disease con- I trol, two new senior posi- I tions have been established I in the Animal Health Divi- I sion. Mr R. M. Salisbury and I Mr R. E. Elliott have been I appointed assistant director I (field services) and assist- I ant director (investigation | services) respectively. The assistant director I (field services) will deal I with all regulatory matters and the assistant director I
(investigation services) with matters related to special disease investigations, the
animal health laboratories, and the continuous stafftraining policy. Both men are well qualified for these responsible positions. Mr Salisbury joined the department as a veterinary diagnostic officer at Wallaceville Animal Research Station in 1947. He later became chief diagnostic officer at Wallaceville and while in this position had over 45 scientific papers published. He is registrar of the Animal Remedies Board, was departmental representative on the National Hydatids Council for several years, and is a member of Oie Dairy Cattle Breeding Committee. His previous position in the Animal Health Division was chief divisional veterinarian. Mr Elliott joined the department as a veterinary research officer at the Wallaceville Animal Research Centre in 1962.
In 1965 he began the establishment of a mastitis research unit at Wallaceville. This was completed in 1968, and in the same year Mr Elliott won a Harkness Fellowship and travelled to the United States to continue his education on cellular immunity and veterinary epidemiology. His previous position was chief veterinary advisory officer at head office.
