University concert
The University of Canterbury Orchestra, composed of students, conducted by Mr Simon Tipping and led by Chloe Moon, played in the University Hall yesterday afternoon. It began with “Seven Rumanian Dances,” the titles of which were given in a language, presumably Rumanian, that left one as befogged as before. However, they were obviously folk dances and began in an atmosphere of rustic good cheer. Some were short, some were jovially vigorous, others were plaintive, but all were interesting and were played colourfully and with rhythmic alertness. The intermezzo and serenade from “Hassan” by Delius were played with nicely balanced and attractive sounds. The intermezzo had some lovely string and woodwind sounds in pensive mood at the beginning, and the serenade had a lethargic charm delicately wrought. The playing hung together well.
Haydn’s Symphony No. 93 in D ended the programme. The swift section of the first movement was played joyously and with clear phrasing. There was lively vitality in tone giving a good over-all effect. The largo had flowing serenity and the minuet had clearly marked rhythm. The joyous finale skimmed along in ebullient style. Mr Tipping conducted clearly, giving confidence to his players and always keeping everything in stylish bounds.—C.F.B.
