Arriving in force
The small North Island farming settlement of Paklhikura, 13 miles from Huntervllle, will be strongly represented at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.
According to “Wise’s New Zealand Guide” (revised 1969), the population of the district is 69 and in a letter to the Games organising committee, the sole teacher, (Mr F. L. R. Harwood, says that a party of 24 is “all set to swoop on Christchurch at the appropriate time.” Mr Harwood writes requesting information about the Games, which, he says, his 10 pupils are extremely interested in. Nine of them are in the party of 24 planning to come to Christchurch, and for 15 months they have been working to save the necessary money.
“The school committee has put in a mangel-wurzel crop, which is expected to add about $4O to each child’s collection this winter,” says Mr Harwood.
