“GROUPING” OF IMPORTS

CN.Z. Prett Association) WELLINGTON, April 18. Large-scale grouping of token import licences was tightening the squeeze on some manufacturers, the director of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association (Mr W. L. Gardner) said tonight. Major retail buying groups were believed to be concentrating the use of the token licences, by importing commodities that reduced demand for similar New Zealand-made goods. “We cannot say there is any breach of the regulations, but this grouping of licences doesn’t follow the spirit of the token licence scheme,” he said. The association is surveying its members for more details of the licence-grouping.
