i The Port Safety Advisory Com-. j mittee’s role at the Lyttelton ’ I waterfront is a major one, but p one about which little is known h by the public. , i The committee, which does not | have executive powers, is respou-; sible to the National Port Safely j Council, it has broad representa-1 [ I lion, and all its members have j 11one aim, to reduce accidents and! suggest preventive methods. I* tVaierfroni xvork is one of the [.most accident-prone occupations'* ‘.in New Zealand. Manx bodies are represented on; the committee, but the nucleus i dconsists of the chairman, at pre ' 'lsent Mr C. .1. Ward, managing I director.of Kinsey and Company, J | Ltd, the vice-chairman (Mr M. E. . II Foster, secretary of the Lyttel(ton Waterside Workers' Union),!] and the secretary (Mr J. Twomey, secretary of the Lyttelton branch i of the Port Employers’ Associa-j] tion). All port unions are represented, include foremen steve-i< dores, watersiders, drivers, rail- , waymen, shipwrights, tally clerks., and Lyttelton Harbour Board em- ■ ployees. The port safety officer, representatives of the Lyttelton; Harbour Board, the Marine De- i t partment. and the Christchurch I ( Road Transport Association, all • participate in the monthly meetings of the committee.
