Brighton beaten again, still goal-less
“We had our chances and we failed to take them. It was the same old story, all over again,” was how the New Brighton coach, R. Taylor, described the frustrations of his club’s third successive goal-less match on Saturday.
Brighton went down. 0-3. to Blockhouse Bay in Auckland, the New i Zealand wing, I. Ormond, I getting all three of the I Bay’s goals. ; "Blockhouse deserved to [win, I will grant them that, [but not by 3-0. Had both [side’s taken all their chances |it would have been 8-5,” Taylor said.
I "Nothing will go right just [when the players need it to. [Warren Quirke had the ball I come between his feet and [was unable to decide which! foot to use; finally he missed; I the ball. IN WRONG PLACE “Another time, he followed up a shot, jumped over the goal-keeper who had gone down to collect it, and was in: the wrong place to collect it, j and was in the wrong place [when the ’keener dropped the [ball. Later, he had the ball; iin a runaway and lost control of it, gathered it in, and 'was then tackled. "It was things like this j [that kept coming between us! and goals. And it is making! the players feel that they will] never score, which is, of! course, the worst feeling they! can have. “After the match on Saturday, the Blockhouse coach, Bert Onnond, told us to forget the result, that things would come right because we had the Players to make them come right. “He said the same thing about Christchurch United after the Bay beat United, 4-1, in the first game of the 1970 competition, and he was right then. I believe lie will be right again. WIN ESSENTIAL ; “Certainly, it is essential that! we win against Auckland City ’next Saturday at English Park.; ■if we don’t we will be in big | trouble.” C. Cawley was used as an orthodox wing and his speed and strong attack caused great problems to the Bay defence. G. Taylor G. Storer, and A. Smith backed attacks strongly and played well in mid-field, and YV. Chisholm was outstanding at centre half. Taylor made two replacements, taking off the captain, S. Gully, I in the second half for B. Smith,, and replacing A. Smith with A. Choute 10 minutes from the end. ’ Ormond scored the first of his J three goals in the thirty-fifth, minute, the second 22 minutes, into the second half, and the; third 10 minutes from the end; from a penalty’ after C. Camp-! bell was brought down.
