Pair nearly trapped

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT. April 16. A freak flood which came down the Wareatea River, near Westport, on Friday almost trapped two Ministry of Works employees who were working on a bridge cylinder 20 feet below the bed. The men, Mr A. Craddock and Mr D. Stephens, were extricated lust before the flood reached the site. Pumps working through the night had been sufficient to keep the area clear while the river was normal and the flood was unexpected. With the flood, however, water quickly entered the cylinder. A new concrete bridge will replace a single-lane structure.
