Gulf Stream curiosity

(N.Z. Preet Aun.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 16. Oceanographers are studying a gigantic eddy of cold water in the Atlantic, which they hope will give them new information about the energy sources which drive the world’s greatest “river”, the Gulf Stream. The eddy. 100 miles wide and more than a mile deep, was first discovered in 1970. It has since been tracked by a satellite of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and by ships. It is the oldest eddy to be observed. It revolves counterclockwise within the much' warmer Gulf Stream.
