Calf sale prices up
"The Press" Special Service BLENHEIM, April 7. Helfer calves were up to $l4 dearer and steen $5 dearer than last week et the second Blenheim calf sale this week. The operations of agents and buyers from South and North Canterbury boosted the market, end a good proportion of the heifers offered will be trucked south of the Rakala. The offering totalled nearly 4000 head and was generally of better quality than last week when 4250 were entered. Best steen made from $B5 to $9B, with calves with Shorthorn blood In their breeding commanding a premium. Last week steer calves ranged from $BO to $93 for the best. Good average steers yesterday went from $7O to $B4 ($62 to *79 last week), and others $64 to $B9 ($56 to $6O). While over the week the steer market improved from $3 to $6, compared with last year they were 00 to $lO better. Helfen yesterday fetched *lO to *l4 more than they did a week ego, with the Shorthorn types again topping the market. Good average lines Improved by up to *7 over last week. They were *4 to *0 dearer than last year. Top heifers made *74 to *Bl (*67 to *77 last week), good avenge sorts $63 to $72 (857 to $6B), and othen *52 to *O2 (*45 to F o n. first time In Blenheim a line of Charolais-Angus steen was yarded, and these eight-month-olds from Tirohanga (East Coast) fetched *93. At last week’s sale the first of the Leefleld Santa GartrudiaShorthorn steen appeared. These made from $69 to **7.
