TROTTING Two-year-olds will provide highlight at Addington

Supremacy among the two-year-old pacers will be all but decided today with the running of the $4500 New Zealand Welcome Stakes at Addington Raceway. Young Quinn, from Edendale, will probably be a firm favourite, but he is expected to receive stern opposition from the Willie Win-Hardcraft bracket.

Young Quinn, a son of Young Charles, has compiled an outstanding record of five wins and a third from six starts; great courage and determination have marked his racing to date. Young Quinn has usually begun safely if a little slowly and it is possible this hesitancy could bring about his downfall. Willie Win began brilliantly last Saturday when he gained his first race win. He paced his opening quarter in better than 32 sec. His stabiemate, Hardcraft the winner of three races, has also shown brilliant early acceleration in several of his races.

Like Young Quinn, Hardcraft and Willie Win have drawn favourably. It they both make their customary speedy beginnings, they should be well clear of Young Quinn at the end of the first furlong. It this is the case, they should make a bold attempt to capitalise on this and make the Edendale challenger work hard to keep his winning record intact. Shannon’s Squire is considered the best of his age in the North Island and he has seven wins to his credit. His two races at Addington, both from 12 yards, have resulted in a fourth and a second. He had little in his favour in the running and was far from disgraced. He should be all the better for those two races on the course and he might take a prominent part in the finish.

Even Step, Rebel Caste, Royal Cheval and Waitaki Star have paced sound races at the meeting and they must be considered as place chances although their chances of beating Young Quinn or the Hardcraft bracket are not highly rated. The meeting between Van Glory, Pippo, Kilat and other well-performed young pacers in the New Zealand Three-year-old Championship will be another highlight of the day. The T.A.B. concession double will be run on the Easter Cup Fnal and the New Zealand Trotting Championship, Robalan and the Pre-cicious-Good Admiral bracket forming a likely combination. ii.se »jn.— MAORI BATTALION HANDICAP *2000; 2:l* cUm; trotUr*; IST.
