F.O.L. proposals on wage rates

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 31. Wage rates should be increased each quarter by an automatic adjustment to compensate for cost-of-living increases disclosed by the Consumers’ Price Index, according to. the Federation of Labour.

This was one of the proposals put to the Government by the federation to be incorporated in its suggested measures, its president (Mr T. E. Skinner) said on Thursday. Mr Skinner said that the Government had rejected the federation’s suggestions, and imposed its own decision. The F.O.L. had expressed its objections to the Government measures on wages and its refusal to be a party to them. The other proposals were that:

Free negotiation of wage rates should continue between employers and workers, without inter- j ference bv the Government or bv any Govern-ment-appointed body. Anv wage increases gained

during the period should be offset against the cost- j of-living increases, so that those workers who had increases less than the cost of living would

receive the balance between the two, and those whose wage increases were greater than the cost-of-living adjustment would receive no more.
