Wheat rise welcomed
Farmers » welcomed the Government’s decision to increase the basic price of wheat, the chairman of the agriculture section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers (Mr N. Q. Wright) said yesterday. It was to be regretted, however, that the Government had decided to reduce the price of Arawa wheat by sc. Many Canterbury wheatgrowers felt that this variety gave a higher average yield than Aotea. and was also less prone to disease than other varieties.
The new variety, Kopara, had rightfully been recognised as one of the preferred varieties and on its baking score could be ranked with Hilgendorf. Mr Wright said that the Industry welcomed the Government’s decision to implement measures to curb costs and inflation, but its recognition of the need to have a stable industry to produce the nation’s bread was* also im- ' portant. The premium of 25c . a bushel for Hilgendorf will continue, and the discount on Arawa has been Increased ‘ to 20c a bushel. The discount * on Kopara has been reduced 1 to 5c a bushel. above these prices will continue for wheat grown in the North Island. Mr Taiboys said the increase in the discount 'on Arawa was necessary to discourage the production of this poor milling and baking quality wheat.
