Capping company

A group of students at the University of Canterbury are setting up a private company to organise some capping activities recently abolished by the university’s Students* Association. The form of the 1972 Capping has been radically changed by the Students’ Association, and the private company intends to resurrect such events as the Miss University contest, the Avon bike race, and the controversial haka party. A spokesman for the group setting up the company (Mr S. Taylor), who was the Capping controller last year, said that the company’s activities would be complementary to those of the official Capping Festival committee.

"The group believes there is strong student demand for the activities the policymakers of the Students’ Association have abolished,” Mr Taylor said.

The president of the Students’ Association (Mr J. Crichton) said that he did not foresee any conflict, in terms of activities offered, between the official capping celebrations and those of the private company.

“It will probably be a worth-while venture and it certainly does not upset us,” he said.
