New interest in theatre

Becoming Involved in the wardrobe for the Christchurch Repertory Society's production of “Murder in the Cathedral,” provided Mrs Gwen Gage with a new interest and new friends. When she arrived in Christchurch with her husband

from their home in Ipswich, Suffolk, a little more than a year ago, Mrs Gage knew no-one in New Zealand. She attended St Michael's Church in Oxford Terrace, and there met Mrs Wendy de la Bere, who is producing "Murder in the Cathedral.” After persuasion from Mrs de la Bere, Mrs Gage, who works as a seamstress, found herself busy sewing Thomas A’Becket’s costume. “I had never done this kind of thing before,” she said yesterday. Although she has had no previous experience in the theatre, Mrs Gage is finding herself very interested in what is going on with the production. “I had no idea how much work went on behind the scenes,” she said. Mrs Gage is now quite keen to do more theatrical work. IA medieval banner for the

production has been made by Mrs de la Bere’s daughter, Madeleine. “Murder in the Cathedral" will be presented from April 1 to 8, with a special production in St Michael’s Church on Easter Day, April 2.

The play will also be produced twice in May in the church, to mark the centenary of St Michael’s. Because of close ties with the church, Mrs de la Bere has used many of the parishioners in the production.
