STUDENTS 9 BOARD
“Unrealistic 99 allowance
The present boarding allowance paid to students sent out of Christchurch for training from the secondary division of the Christchurch Teachers’ College has been labelled totally inadequate by the college branch of the Post Primary Teachers’ Association.
Students are paid $4 a week towards the cost of board while away from Christchurch on section training. This sum was unrealistic, said a spokesman for the P.P.T.A. branch yesterday. It did not take into account the cost of board in various parts of New Zealand, which was as much as $l4 a week. Students were often put in the position of having to lose up to $lOO of their own money when out of Christchurch on section training. The situation as it now stood penalised, in particular, students who were married. “They cannot afford to lose $100,” the spokesman said. No complaint over the amount of the boarding allowance has been made by the college Students’ Association. The P.P.T.A. branch, which represents some of the lecturers at the college, is making representations on the matter to the Department of Education.
