Emerging force?

South Canterbury might be the emerging force in South Island basketball if its performance against club sides from other parts of the country last Saturday can be taken as a reliable guide. South Canterbury won all four of its games, beating Checkers (Christchurch) 64-61, Y.M.C.A. (Christchurch) 66-52, St Hilda (Dunedin) 81-53 and Y.M.C.A. B (Christchurch) 84-66.

Checkers finished runnerup and Y.M.C.A. third. The South Canterbury team has an impressive line-up this season. The player-coach is P. Ross, a former Canterbury captain, and in support he has the Hutt Valley colts’ coach for the last two years, K. Mair; the Otago representative, K. Murray; and a former South Island player, K. Murdock.
