Swimming records fall

At any of tho ma|or swimminlng camlvalt in Canterbury during the season one Inevitably expected a surge of new records, and the final three sessions of the Wharenul "Junior Olympics" at the Wharenul Coronation Pool on Saturday were no exception.

Last week on the first two days of the “Olympics” a total of 24 meeting records were broken and swimmers in the eight to 15 years age groups got into the act again on Saturday breaking a further 13 records. With nearly 2000 entries for the two week-ends and more than 300 competitors representing 16 clubs in the Canterbury centre and one from Timaru (the Eastern Districts centre), strong competition and excitement was assured and in fact the "Olympics” appeared to create more interest than any other carnival in the centre this season. Again, as was the case last week, there were several names among the record breakers which have seldom been seen during the season. A young girl from the New Brighton Club, Kerrie Olesen. had the honour of breaking the longest standing record for the "Olympics” when she beat Miss A. Bunt's 33 1-3 metres breaststroke record, which had stood since 1966. In the heats she broke the time by ,lsec when she recorded 29.35ec but she took another .2sec off her heat time In the final. Jane Tweedie (Sockburn Park), who has been breaking records at regular Intervals during the last two seasons had the distinction of breaking Janice Murdoch’s under 11 girls’ four lengths Individual medley record by l.flsec—an excellent effort. Oh her improvement of the last two seasons Miss Tweedie is shaping into one of the centre’s brightest prospects for future years. Martin Forbes (North Beach), broke the boys’ under 11 33 1-3 metres breaststroke record in both the heats and final reducing the old time by -Bsec in both swims to 29.45ec. Although Mtss J. Parkhouse Is not a backstroker, it must still have been a boost to the confidence of Geraldine Ray (Sockburn Park), to break Miss Parkhouse’s under 14 girls’ 100 metres backstroke record. Miss Ray recorded Imin 20.935ec taking .2 sec off the old record. Roseanne Baker (Sockburn Park) was the only swimmer on Saturday to break two records in different events. In the under 14 girls’ 100 metres backstroke she took I.6sec off the previous record in winning her heat in Imin 19.3 sec and in the four lengths individual medley she took l.lsec off the old record of Imin 50.3 sec. Other record breakers were: Melanie Jones (Wh.). under eight girls’ 33 1-3 metres backstroke; Anthony Cuttriss (St A.), under eight 33 1-3 metres backstroke: Nickl Hudson (S.P.), under 12 girls’ 66 2-3 metres backstroke: Wharenui, under 11 girls 4 x 33 1-3 metres medley relay: Wharenui. under 15 4 x 33 1-3 metres m ?SbrevStions used In the following results of finals, are:— Amberley (Ambl, Beckenham (B.), Elmwood (E.), Greymouth (G.l, Hokitika (Hok.), Jellie Park (J.P.).
