Record attendance at Methven show
The Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association made an all-out effort to provide a show which had both variety and depth of quality. The response from the community in turning out exhibits and in organising the fiftyeight annual show at Methven on Saturday must have been heartening for the association.
The eflforts of the association were rewarded in record entries in most sections and a record gate taking of $lO6l, compared with $896 last year. Once again the weather was fine, though a cool wind in the late afternoon chilled spectators watching the steer riding and calf roping exhibitions.
A large gallery watched the chopping events, with some of the best choppers in the South Island competing. Competition was keen in the cooking and decorative sections, and there was a good range of farm machinery and trade exhibits.
There were 65 entries in the export beef competition won by Mr T. G. Callaghan, the association’s president. The judge of the section, Mr R. Jameson, said that the entries were of a high standard, though the percentage ol steers was a little overdone, The formula of cuts and hool judging tended to favour a steer of about 5001 b dressed weight, he said. The judges of the sheep classes, which had more than 10# more entries than last year, generally agreed that the standard was particularly high considering the season. The judge of the fat lambs, Mr E. S. Inkster, of Darfeld, said that his only complaint was that too many of the lambs were too prime. The Southdown ewes judge, Mr A. T. Heron, said he thought breeders must have been breeding to suit modern conditions, judging by their appearances. The judges of the decorative section, Mesdames L. G. and S. J. Lemon, of Leeston. said that the entries were of the highest standard they had been asked to judge tn their 12 years experience in Canterbury. CHAMPIONS Horses.—Hack: Mr and Mrs A. Dunn's Night call.
