REPRINTS AND NEW EDITIONS

The Soul Of The White Ant. By Eugene N. Marais. Jonathan Cape and -Anthony Blond. 139 pp. This is a reprint and translation from the Afrikaans of a controversial book (1937) by a South African whose stature in bis own country remains high as a st.ientist, lawyer, poet and writer. Self-educated in science—and from such amateurs in natural history much has been revealed—he pioneered studies in animal behaviour—particularly on baboons and ants. This report on ants is intellectually exciting. Because he can talk on the soul of ants Marais’s writing appeals more than the zoological text-books. The contention of his biographer that much of Marais’s original work was plagarised by Maeterlinck will attract notice, but local authorities who know the literature seem prepared to contest this. Educating Your Dog. By Colleen M. Cooper. Pegasus Press. 80 pp. New revised edition. First published in 1959, this is a reliable guide to training a dog, written by a woman with a vast knowledge and experience gained from years of working with dogs and their handlers. A completely revised and ■ expanded edition, this book sets out clearly the latest methods of obedience training, everything from choosing a puppy to advanced competitive obedience _ and working dog trials. For the beginner who wishes to train his dog to be well behaved or for the dog handler with competitive ambitions, this guide is invaluable.
