TWIZEL PRICES
Two Twizel shopkeepers claimed on Wednesday that inspectors from the Department of Industries and Commerce had suggested they increase their prices far sugar and butter to bring them into line with standard prices for the rest of New Zealand.
They said that three shopkeepers in the township had made the price increases, to which the department has since objected. The third shopkeeper could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening. The increases were made last week, and tfie district! officer of the department (Mr P- L. Harland) had said on Tuesday that the increases were not permitted under the present price freeze and were not ths result of instructions to the shopkeepers by the inspectors. The chairman of the Twizel Businessmen's Association (Mr T. A. Jekyman), who is a grocer in the township, said that it was only as a result of what the inspectors said that the prices were increased.
Mr Harland said on Thursday that he would be only too pleased to discuss the matter further if Mr Jellyman would write to him, but there was no further comment he could make at this stage.
