Miners improve on firm Australian market

Leading mining stocks recorded some of the best gains, while selected industrials and oils showed small improvements, on Australian stock exchanges yesterday.

The CRA group improved again with CRA up 10c to 690 c, Bougainville was 10c under at 375 c, Hamersley rose 4c to 272 c.

NBHC Holdings gained 15c at 435 c and MIM gained 2c to 349 c. Uraniums were mixed throughout the session with Queensland Mines down 15c to 375 c, however speculative, Pan Continental gained 5c to 110 c. MKU gained 15c at 185 c. BHP held Thursday’s closing level of 1230 c on news of the big steel order from West Germany, but CSR, BHP’s Mt Newman partner, gained 8c to 532 c. EZI gained a further 3c

to 378 c, but British Tobacco and Comalco eased slightly. Paterson, National Bank and Custom Credit were unchanged.

Banks improved a little with the Bank of NSW up 2c at 736 c and CBC rose the same amount to 300 c. Slater Walker fell 5c to 245 c. AA Oil turned in one of the best performances in the oil sector, rising 15c to 125 c in line with London, but Woodside-Burmah was unable to hold its gains, slipping 4c to 160 c.
