YACHTING TRIALS

AUCKLAND. The Canterbury helmsman, B. de Thier (Finn), and the Aucklanders, J. Bilger (Flying Dutchman), R. J. Watson (Dragon), and S. Marten (Soling), won the opening races in the Olympic yachting trials at Torbay yesterday. Conditions were leaden skies, poor visibility and intermittent rain, but with a gentle nor’easter that never puffed above 16 knots and a moderate swell. Results (Auckland names unless otherwise stated): — Finn.—B. de Thier (Canterbury) 1, J. G. Farmer (Rotorua) 2, J. S. Douglas 3, B. L. Morley 4, B. E. Trelekven (Canterbury) 5, P. Rudllng 6.
