Record sum for tiki
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 9. A world record price of $3OOO was paid for a tiki at an auction in Wellington today. The previous record of $2500 was set last month. Bidding for the 200-year-old tiki began at $lOOO. The final price was paid by a Wellington buyer. The tiki was found in the Kaikoura ranges in 1890 and was kept by a Nelson family for 80 years. It is Sin long and tin thick. The carving is pre-Euro-pean in dark-coloured greenstone.
The tiki is considerably worn and the legs are broken off.
Another pre-European tiki was brought for $2500. It was originally bought from a Wellington jeweller for $l5O.
