Turkish sentence on schoolboy
Sir, —The “Guardian Weekly” reported some time last year that agents provo-
cateur were persuading travellers in Turkey to buy marijuana, etc., and immediately denouncing them to the police. The heavy sentencing of a 14-year-old is a comparable action and is the sort of inhumanity found among those opposed to the use of marijuana (e.g., a Californian court sentenced a young woman, the mother of some illegitimate children, to be sterilised because she was found by the police in someone else’s room where marijuana was discovered. Public outcry quashed the punishment). —Yours, etc., H. C. BREWERTON. March 8, 1972.
