Games coin approved

The approved design of the commemorative dollar coin which is expected to raise $200,000 for the Commonwealth Games has been sent to the Royal Australian Mint The coin was designed by Professor Paul Beadle, head of the School of Fine Arts at Auckland University, and bears the Queen’s head on the obverse side. The reverse depicts Grecian-style athletes running around the Games symbol. A quarter of a million of the dollars will be struck at the first minting and they will be sold in a presentation pack for $2 each from September this year until the Games are held. More will be minted if necessary. Professor Beadle is also designing a commemorative bronze medal which will be presented to all officials and competitors at the Games, and the gold, silver and bronze medals for winners and place-getters.
