Pollution feared
Concern that a pollution danger was created by the location of a rubbish dump close to the Ashley River was expressed at a meeting of the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society on Wednesday evening. The water conservation and pollution committee of the council reported that two Rangiora district dumps were to be closed, but one near the Ashley was to be kept open.
Speakers said that the dump was in an area where ponds formed, and pollution would have access to the river itself.
The committee’s report said that the North Canterbury Catchment Board, the Marine Department, the Department of Internal Affairs and the National Pollution Committee had been told of the society’s objection to rubbish dumping in areas near river-beds.
Mr G. Mugford said the practice could lead to dangerous pollution entering the river.
