RANDOM REMINDER

LINCOLN FAIR

Life in the country must be hell. Take a place like Lincoln, for instance. It’s only 15 miles from Cathedral Square, but for us young swingers, a trip to Lincoln is like being set down in the middle of the Gobi desert.

Hardly ever a decent street fight there. Bombs are rarely thrown, although a few verbal ones are tossed about from time to time, it seems, and the main street does not echo to the tread of the protest marchers. There are hardly any recorded cases of rare white elephants sitting on police cars. It must be terribly dull, all this

serenity and friendship But even the most sedate people, in the most sedate townships, occasionally let their hair down, and not only to free themselves of straws. And when they do, in these country towns, they really let things rip. You won’t know Lincoln tomorrow. It will be humming. Because it’s the day for the annual fair to raise funds for the Lincoln High School, and out there, they do things properly. It has always been a great show, and this time, they say, it will be better than ever. You know how kids like

fairs? This is a beaut. Mum can fill the larder, without crying at the cost, with country-style cakes and produce, and they have variety stalls whith are just what they say they are, and sewing stalls, and Dad can play Walter Mitty at the static display of Antarctic gear, or mill about the white elephant stall. There’s a gymnastic display and for the kids, a Noddy train, and a continuous showing of kids’ films. Yeah, there’s something for everyone, even if it’s not much more than the friendly and cheerful people you meet on these country happenings. You ought to be there.
