MT COOK TERMINAL

A terminal building of alpine design will be built at the Tasman airstrip at Mount Cook by Mount Cook Airlines. Tenders will be called soon. The secretary of the airline (Mr T. K. Cherry) said verbal approval for the $40,000 project was received from the Mount Cook National Park Board yesterday. It is planned to have the building ready for use by the end of the year. The terminal will have 2400 sq. ft of floor space at

ground and mezzanine levels, and will be surmounted '»y a control tower. According to the airline’s chairman (Mr H. R. Wigley) the view from the terminal’s passenger lounge of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman will be the finest in the Southern Alps. The general manager (Mr M. Corner) said that at present passengers went straight from a bus to the aircraft, although there was a small room in the hangar for ski-plane passengers.

Another 700 ft of sealed taxiway and aircraft parking area at the airstrip was not far from completion, said Mr Corner. The new terminal would be at the edge of this area. The new area is being provided to separate the company’s Hawker Siddeley 748 service from the ski-plane service, which will continue to use the original parking area. Working drawings for the terminal are being prepared.
