Life-line appeal

Unless sufficient funds are found urgently the future efficiency of Life-Line, the interdenominational and only crisis intervention service in Christchurch, could be seriously impaired. The director of Life-Line (the Rev. W. E. Falkingham) said last night that in the quarter which ended on December 31, 1971, the service suffered a deficit of $2005. In this same period the total number of calls dealt with exceeded 1000—the first time this has happened since Life-Line began in 1964. Mr Falkingham said that the greatest number of persons dealt with were with marriage or family problems; there were 323 such cases. Persons depressed or with psychiatric problems numbered 274; and suicide threats and attempts were 27. A total of 161 persons were dealt with in face-to-face counselling. On Friday Life-Line will hold its annual street appeal —the organisation’s only direct appeal to the public. Mr Falkingham said the organisation relied entirely on public support for its work,
