SUDAN AND RUSSIA
ttt.Z. Preis Atsn.—Copyright) BEIRUT (Lebanon) March 7. President Jaafar al-Nemery says that his relations with the Soviet Union are “very bad” and that he might seek arms from other countries.
"The Soviet Union wants to dominate us,” President Nemery told the proEgyptian Beirut newspaper “Al Anwar” in an interview. The 41-year-old majorgeneral signed an arms deal with the Soviet Union last April and later announced that he was boosting the Sudanese Army from 28,000 to 75,000 men. Asked what would he do if Moscow stopped the supply of spare parts to Sudanese forces, President alNemery replied: “We shall discard Soviet weapons and revamp our armaments system seeking weapons from other sources. There are several other countries willing to sell.” He did not name them but the implication was he might get arms from the West.
