Motorway signs
Sir,—As a regular user of the northern motorway which begins at Belfast and ends near Pinehaven I have racked my brains for the last 13 months to find some reason, any reason at all, for three signs still appearing near the old outlet at the Neeves Road junction. The signs indicate the approaching end to the motorway, half a mile away, quarter of a mile away, and "ending”! And then it goes on for another four miles! The pood Ministry of Works—so busy that they haven’t had a chance to get around to shifting three signs, in 13 months. Or perhaps they have a reason which has eluded me.— Yours, etc, A. G. WINNICOTT, Broomfield, February 20, 1972. [Mr P. M. Newby, acting District Commissioner of Works, replies: "Motorway signs cannot be erected on the Pinehaven-Neeves Road section until it has been gazetted as a motorway. This action was delayed for a period (awaiting the erection and testing of lanterns), but the necessary formalities should be completed and the signs erected within the next fortnight.”]
