Cycle tracks
Sir,—What Is the emptiest place on suburban roads? The pavement. Some United States cities have introduced cycle tracks on the pavements. They are being built alongside many freeways. The advantages are obvious. Why not here?—Yours, etc, EJ.S. February 10, 1972. [The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr M. B. Hayes), replies: “It is agreed that there is merit in the correspondent’s suggestion, but unless the footpath was very wide and there was physical Reparation of cycles and pedestrians, the combined use could be dangerous. Most of the central citv footpaths are only 10ft wide. Special Pleasures to assist cycles are feeing considered, but the <most practical suggestion hseems to be to designate special cycle routes. The preJsent traffic regulations proLhibit riding on the footpath.”]
