“Spinster image”

Sir,—David Gunston tells us how well many women live singly all their lives. He dissects the reasons for spinsterhood with the finesse of a wood-chopper. His obtuse technicalities ignore the effects of wars. This country lost in round figures 16,800 men in the First World War and 11,600 in the second—--28,400 young men in 30 years among them many of the finest fellows we had. The spinsters’ defence mechanisms are better than Mr Gunston thinks. Fortunately he has failed to penetrate the feelings of many charming single women. One can imagine him neatly chopping them into yet more categories.—Yours, etc.,

RED POPPY. February 22. 1972.
