Children ’s ward at Qui Nhon
Christchurch raised more money for the Sir Walter Nash Vietnam appeal than any other centre in New Zealand, and exceeded its $BOOO target by more than $4OOO, according to the final report of the appeal committee.
The appeal was launched in October, 1968; to raise $60,000 for the building of a children’s ward at Qui Nhon Hospital as a memorial to Sir Walter Nash, who before he died had sought some way to help war orphans and injured children in Vietnam. By the time the appeal closed, however, $86,785 had been raised, and it was possible to add an outpatient clinic to the hospital as well. Of the total, Christchurch raised $12,442, Wellington $10,114, and Auckland $9461, just over half its target. Nelson’s contribution was $921, a further $570 came from Oamaru, and $482 from Timaru. The new ward and outpatient clinic were opened in March last year.
The picture shows a section of the children’s ward, and two of its young occupants.
