Around The Greens

The unpredictable nature of bowls was never better illustrated than in the semifinal of the champion of I champion pairs last Sunday; between Cashmere and Fen-! dalton. With four ends remaining,! Fendalton, represented by F. B. 800 l and T. Lock (s), led 20-7 and even when Cashmere, whose team was L. Dailey and F. Fiecken (s), scored a three on the eighteenth end and a single on the nineteenth the large band of Fendalton supporters present had no real cause for anxiety.

However, with Lock running off his only bowl on the head and some fine drawing by Fiecken, Cashmere collected a five on the twentieth end to narrow the gap to 20-16. Even so. Fendalton still fairly safe, especially in view of' the fine drawing under pressure of Lock in the previous round when, almost single-handed, he held off a late charge by W. T. Newburgh (Papanui). But Cashmere achieved the almost unbelievable by scoring a six on the last end—to snatch victory 22-20 — from a head where bowls were strewn all over the rink and none close to the kitty.

It was, perhaps, the shock of reaching the final after 1 appearing to have lost all chance of doing so that contributed to Cashmere’s rather dismal showing in the last round. It was never comfort-] able with the short heads] thrown by St Albans and; went down 30-7 with three; ends unplayed. v & * K. G. Shivas completed a] notable double at Bumside i this year by winning both the singles and pairs titles. In the singles final he beat last year’s winner, D. C. Lofley. Shivas played lead in the pairs for T. Brady and it was the third successive year that Brady had taken this championship. Shivas was also his ] lead last year. In the final, which produced an extremely high | standard of bowling. Brady, and Shivas beat D. H. Camp-! bell and J. C. Kennedy (s). j Earlier, Campbell under- i lined his promise by winning I the colts title without losing* a life. His last two oppo-i nents here were E. D. Pope! and P. G. Collings. E. Watt’s team of I.| Duthie, J. Irvine and C. G.; Crawford has won the fours! championship. In the final it 1 beat a team comprising A. R. i Hirst. S. W. A. Morrison, V. E. Blagdon and A. M. F. Turner played the more; consistent bowls to beat L. Dailey, who was also runner-, up in the event last year. Dailey gained some compensation when he shared the] pairs title with F. Fiecken. The runners-up were J. Curtis I and K. Donaldson and although Donaldson played some brilliant shots Fiecken’s consistency was the deciding ' factor. Curtis must be considered a little unlucky not to win a title as he reached the finals of both the pairs and the fours and was a quarterfinalist in the singles. H. Wilkinson is playing so well that he looks the man to beat in the Hamilton Plate, a competition for nonchampionship winners.

s! R. G. Ilton, who won the, ■; colts championship at' Amberley, has a chance of ' taking the singles title as well. He reached the final by • ] beating E. C. Hill and will now meet K. W. McFarlane, , who eliminated F. Dobley in ] the semi-finals. Some fine leading by C. James helped J. Hayes to win the pairs championship. The runners-up were D. Cutler and H. Denton. The champion four has been found and it comprises D. Wootton, R. Croft, W. Rickerby and H. Denton. S. Ashworth took the

handicap singles when he beat M. Penfold on an extra !end. Penfold held three shots ! on the extra end until AshI worth drew inside him with I his last bowl. In the club’s fours, Denton and Dobley’s teams are the i current leaders. » & St ' The team of W. Brown, C. ; Child, W. Thomas and R. | Hopkins (s) has won the fours championship at the Lyttelton Watersiders’ club. It had a stiff battle before beating W. Robson’s four in the final Twelve members of the club competed in the Australian Watersiders tournament at Newcastle before Christmas and 16 were on hand for the New Zealand watersiders tournament at Napier this month. Although winning no prizes, the members acquitted themselves well at both I events. Ss S: * J. C. McDonald’s team of C. W. Henderson, B. D. Gregan and M. B. Hayes has won the fours championship ' at Elmwood. In the final it beat R. Norris’s four, 22-17. At one stage Thomas was behind 21-9, but he fought back strongly to go down by only two points, 21-19. A quarter-final of the Elmwood fours between R. . I Green and M. Moore de- ; veloped into a keen tussle ; with Green scoring five points on the last two ends i to win 22-17. j # $ ♦ The annual bowling tour- j nament for Canterbury local body representatives' was , held on the Bumside green. ' Eighteen teams took part and ] ; the winners, representing the ' Riccarton Borough Council, , were D. Gainsford. F. R. Langley, M. Forman and R. ; iS. Lester (s). * * » After a fine exhibition by both players, J. P. Anderson i scored five points on the last two ends to beat K. G. 1 Murray 17-14 in a quarter- i final of the Linwood singles ' championship. i Anderson also retained his life on the other side of the board by beating the defend- ; ing champion, B. J. Smith, 17-11. In the other quarter-finals, ; H. Molloy beat S. Snedden, 123-8, and E. Lyons came ; from behind to eliminate H. I Molloy, 17-13. Anderson already has one] ititle to his credit.'His team] of B. J. Smith. B. J. Sansom] j and I. E. Smith captured the! ' fours crown when it beat L. ] Muirson’s combination of F G. Burgess, A. B. Hughes and Lyons, 20-8, in the final. Anderson has now won this event five times in the I last eight ’ years. In its annua] game against Hampstead last week-end, Linwood was successful, by 227 points to 196. » » * Last year’s singles winner at Canterbury, R. T. Bailey, was eliminated for the , championship this year when he went down 17-15 to A. Murray in a semi-final. On the last end Bailey held the two shots he needed for victory until Murray trailed the , kitty to score a single. In the final of the fours, ! R. McLeod beat J. Wood : 26-13. McLeod had R. Bailey, R. Rolton and A. Bailey with him and Wood’s team 1 was M. Baker. S. O’Cai- 1 laghan and A. Young.

i McLeod came through the championship undefeated, which meant he had 10 successive victories. v ❖ The fours final at Mount Pleasant will be between J. Green and R. Wilkinson, both of whom are one-lifers. C. R. Hoskings has won the colts and W. Hammond and J. R. Saundercock (s) took the pairs. G. Anderton’s Morrison Avenue team won the club’s Februaiy open tournament when it beat a Spreydon four skipped by H. Berry in a play-off. * ♦ # D. Trist, 19-12. The singles final will be between B. MacManus and the winner of the MeierHeller semi-final. South Brighton recently beat New Brighton by 186 points to 135 in the annual game for the Mathison Cup. # * # The singles final at Shirley! will be between R. Ward and! the winner of the semi-final' between A. Ellingford and J. Thompson. G. Hunter had the misfortune to break a shoulder bone and was unable to play his semi-final against Ward. The colts title has gone to A. Carson, and the winner of the first-year players’ event was H. Kirk. # # * C. Cox’s team of S. R. Whitfield, A. Tall and H. Martin overcame a slow start Ito beat S. R. Inglis’s team of H. Leigh, L. Bench and W. Johnson in the final of the fours championship at Barrington. Inglis dominated the early ends and playing the fourteenth he led 18-7, a margin that would have been wider but for some fine saving by Cox. On a short head Cox scored a four on the fourteenth end and then he added three more points on the fifteenth. Inglis got clear again, 19-14, but Cox’s four lifted its standard and went on to win narrowly. In the singles, one semifinal will be between W. D. Sams and the winner of the game between J. O’Neill and I. Parry. On the other side of the board K. Scott is a semi-finalist and his opponent will be either M. Robinson or E. A. Allen.
