President Anwar Sadat told Egypt’s top political body that the battle with Israel would begin when the country was fully mobilised, a newspaper report said in Cairo. The mass-circulation “AlAkbar” said that the President declined to give a date when he addressed a secret session of the National Congress of the Arab Socialist Union.
“The zero hour will remain a secret until it actually starts,” the newspaper quoted President Sadat as saying.
It would begin “when we complete full mobilisation for the battle and to face the United States challenge” and the entire nation should be fully prepared for the battle. TTie report coincided with an editorial by Egypt's leading political commentator, Mr Mohamed Hassanein Heykal, which greeted with scepticism a United States suggestion for “proximity talks” with Israel.
