HOUSING NEEDS

Talks with Minister fN.Z. Preu Association, WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. The Government was looking at the formation of a national authority to coordinate housing needs, said Mr G. R. Rear, vice-president of the Timber Merchants’ Federation, today. He was speaking after he had seen the Minister of Housing (Mr Holland). Mr Kear presented submissions to the Minister seeking action to arrest the present situation in home building which he described as “in the doldrums.” Mr Kear said he did not receive any indication of the structure or function of the authority, but he said he hoped it would be along the lines recommended by the Commission of Inquiry into Housing in its report last year. Mr Kear also said that the Government was looking at State house lending limits and the availability of housing finance from, other than Government sources, but no details were available.
