Community School
“Traditional links are not easily broken in Christchurch but since World War 11, and with the growth of neighbourhood secondary schools, local confidence in these schools and support for them from the community they serve, have grown remarkably,”—these words from the Regional Superintendent of Education (Mr H. M. McMillan).
Mr McMillan who is responsible for the direction of all primary, secondary and technical education in the South Island, south of Nelson, has the utmost faith in the ability of all secondary schools in Christchurch and
nearby centres to provide the staff, equipment, and range of courses to cater f ully for all levels of ability and all interests of pupils. “With the opening this year of Kaiapoi High School, yet another community will have its own secondary school. This school of the 'S 68’ design has been developed to supersede the ‘Nelson’ type school which have been built since the early 19505,” Mr McMillan said. “The new plan form for a secondary school is the most flexible yet designed, as it is suitable for a roll of approximately 750, which Kaiapoi will probably achieve, but it is just as suitable for a school twice that size, as in Ashburton College, which will be the first S 68 school completed in New Zealand."
