Rebel Caste’s fine trial

Rebel Caste advanced in favour for the Timaru Nursery Stakes on Saturday when he ' beat Mountbatten by a neck in his heat of a parade over 10 furlongs in trials yesterday at Addington Raceway. Few two-year-olds engaged at Washdyke were among the starters in the four heats and, apart from Rebel Caste, Arabian King and Klshmul went inglyScottish Joy was a shade slow at the start of the first heat for fillies, but she soon recovered, and over the last furlong she finished much too well for Ann’s Pride (Tuft—Young Ann), and won by a length after taking 2min 50 l-ssec for the 10 furlongs—the last half mile in Imin Ssec, and the final quarter in 33sec. Clairvon (Tartan Hanover— Main) showed ability to finish third, clear of the pace-maker, Summer Chat (Garrison Hanover—Spring Chat), with Oh Kay (Pacing Simba—Fairlea Lass) making up ground for fifth after tangling near the straight entrance. Kishmul (Lordship—Kuyaway) tangled at the start of the second heat, but she had too much speed for the others over the final furlong. She won by a head from Lady Hodgen (Hodgen’s Surprise—Merrisa), with gaps to Irish Rhythm (Scottish Hanover—Garreen) and First Debate (Forward—Aruma). The winner took 2min 47 4-ssec for the 10 furlongs, the last halfmile in Imin 5 2-ssec. The pace was slack in the first heat for colts and geldings. Premier Royal (Dark Signal— Cordelia) finished solidly to shade his stable-mate, Arabian King (Tuft—Spring Greetings), with Willie Win (Good ChaseSpangle) bursting between them after losing ground and dropping to the rear early. His effort to finish so close-was outstanding. Hanover Bay (Scottish Hanover—Dorstan) was fourth, followed by Apollo Fifteen (Lumber Dream—Sarona), which was not pushed. . The winner took 2min 53 3-ssec for the 10 furlongs, the final quarter in 32 2-ssec. Rebel Caste began well after starting a length back, and he was handy throughout his heat. The son of Bandit and Ruling Caste took the lead from Mount batten (Honest Master—Cabana) with six furlongs left, and beat that runner handily after taking 2mln 47sec for the 10 furlongs, the last half-mile :n Imin 5 l-ssec. and the final quarter in 30 4-Ssec. Rebel Caste should make a bold bld at W ashdyke on Saturday. Rollon Waitaki (Waitaki Hanover—Rola Dillon) wns a useful third, with Holmfield (Lordship— Gladfield) showing alillity above average to finish next, well clear of the remainder, headed by Kadell Direct (Armbro Del —Katanga).

Cbatton Ross showed that he will be the hardest to beat in the Temuka Handicap at Washdyke when he made most of the pace and won his heat of the 2min 20sec Class Troi:. He took 2mln lOsec for his last mile, Imin 4sec for the last half-mile, and 32sec for the final quarter. The full 13 furlongs took 3min 36 3-ssec. Portage, a likely prospect tor the Claremont Handicap at the same meeting, did veil to run Chatton Ross to hall’ a length, but it was only on sufferance that he got so close. Timmi was a fair third, ahead of Miss Winter. Buckingham shaped like an early graduate from maiden company when he led throughout his heat in 3min 39 2-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 3 4-ssec. He won by a length from Texas Marshal, with Anteme ridian and Grizzly Bear next. Del Logan gained an easy win in the second heat, returning 3mln 42 4-ssec. Camen Suva finished second, ahead of Tunza Time, which came home well, and Aceras. Sunshield beat Oakleigh Giri by a head in the other heat in 3mln 42sec, the last half mile in Imin 5 l-ssec. Marlon was a length away third, a head in front of Continuity. Palmdale’s 3min 33 4-osec for the 13 furlongs was the. fastest in five heats for 2mln 20sec class pacers. It was a mest impressive winner, and B. H. Lynskey should not have to wait long to win with this promising young pacer. Highland Spinster. Marama

Boy, and Rory were Timaru candidates to show to advantage, and Hi Bee, Astris and Lady Tuft returned sound efforts.

Five horses qualified to start at totalisator meetings by returning 3min 21sec or faster for 12 furlongs. The best time of 3mln 16 2-ssec was returned by Miss Bay, a four-year-old sister to Globe Bay. Like that horse, she is raced by Mr S. J. Wheatley, of Woodend, and is trained by J. A. Carmichael at Templeton. Results:—
