Useful sprints
"The Press” Special Service
Several useful sprint tasks were turned In by horses engaged on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday at Invercargill yesterday morning. One of the best sprints was by the Wingatul Novice candidate, Shirley's Last, which worked with Atabelle and the open sprinter, Willie Beware. Shirley’s Last drifted back early, but the trio finished abreast at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4sec. They ran an easy first furlong and finished up from the half-mile in 50sec, the best of the morning. The course proper was open, with the trestles 15ft out. The track was firm.
Trix's Sister and Robbie, both of which are to race at Wlngatui, dashed over half a mile in 50 2-ssec and finished together, the first furlong in 12 2-ssec. Princess Lomond and Linley Wood worked keenly over half a mile in 51sec, the first furlong in 12 3-ssec.
Howgame sprinted half a mile in 53sec, the last three in 39 4-ssec. Howgame, which is to contest the Dominion Handicap, has not raced since he won the Nursery Handicap at InvrcargiU at the New Year, for which he was later disqualified—on appeal —for interference.
Joh Hanan and Abebe were paired over a round, finishing up from the half-mile in 54 3-ssec. Joh Hanan is to make his debut as a hurdler at Wingatul on Saturday. He ran a creditable fourth against the open sprinters on the first day.
