Man adrift for two days
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, February 22.
Mr David Randel Hearn, the 22-year-old survivor from a sunken 30foot fishing boat off the Chatham Island, is believed to be recovering in hospital at Waitangi from the effects of almost two days exposure.
Mr Hearn was rescued this morning by another fishing boat after an air and sea search, launched at dawn, found him clinging to a liferaft from the Cascade which is reported to have capsized and sunk in heavy seas between Pyramid Rock and Rua Reef on Sunday. The skipper of the Cascade was drowned. He was William Barton, of Woodridge Road, Christchurch. Mr Hearn was rescued by the Norseman this morning, and the police said he was taken to Waitangi this afternoon. His mother, Mrs M. J. Hearn, of Temuka, said: “We think he spent about a couple of days and nights on a raft in the open sea, and is suffering from exposure.” The Cascade left Owenga in the Chatham Islands at 6.45 a.m. on Sundafy in rough seas, and a search began this morning after the vessel had failed to return on schedule. , This morning a Bristol
Freighter, diverted to the scene, saw an oil slick off Pitt Island.
