Todds go to ranch

fN.Z.P.M.-Beu«er—CopKrtflht) SALISBURY, Feb. 22. A former Premier of Rhodesia, Mr Garfield Todd, and his daughter, Miss Judith Todd, were freed from gaol today after five weeks in solitary confinement, and taken by police escort to spend a continuing term of security detention inside an area about a mile square on their ranch home.

Two other political detainees arrested at about the same time as the Todds last month—the treasurer of the African National Council, Mr Josiah Chinamano. and his wife, Mrs Ruth Chinamano —

were also being taken from gaol for detention at an undisclosed place. The moving of the four detainees. all outspoken political opponents of the Smith Government, was disclosec in a Government statement today soon after Mrs Grace Todd announced that her husband and daughter were being allowed home. Health reasons The statement said: "Arrangements have been made for health reasons and on humanitarian grounds for fours persons who were detained last month to be removed from their present places of detention. "Two of these persons vzill now be detained at their home and a suitable place is being found for the other detainees.”

The statement also reported that the release of the four had made necessary an amendment to the country’s

emergency regulations. This will enable Rhodesian authorities to control access to the new detention areas—in the Todd’s case an area with an 800 yards radius of the family homestead at Shabani. 250 miles south-east of Salisbury. The Todds were due to reach the ranch later this afternoon—the 63-year-old former Premier, from Gatooma, 100 miles south-west of Salisbury and his 28-yair-old daughter from the Clikurubi Prison Farm, 10 mr.es outside the capital.
