Garland to load aluminium
The 5453-ton Garland, one of 17 thips owned by Garland Transports, of Liberia, will load 1000 tons of aluminium for Japan at the smelter at Bluff. She recently discharged 1200 tons of Japanese steel at Wellington and another 1500 tons at Lyttelton. Her cargo was loaded at Kobe.
The Garland, which Is manned by South Koreans, is commanded by Captain Shin Seok Hun and has a complement of 30 men. She is under charter to the Japan Line which has chartered many vessels lately to augment its own fleet. The Garland sailed from Lyttelton for Bluff last evening. Although Captain Hun would not comment further, it has been increasingly evident at Lyttelton lately that there is a growing tendency for Japanese shipowners to charter outside vessels to lift their surplus cargoes or to put some of their own vessels under flags of convenience. Japanese seamen have good conditions and are relatively well paid compared with those seamen who are employed under flags of convenience. Now a great maritime country, Japan is following the United States and Britain, which have been doing this for years for economic reasons. * # «
There was a surplus of 95 men on the Lyttelton waterfront yesterday and 450 men were engaged for daylight hours. Another 23 men were engaged for supplementary hours last evening. There should be a larger surplus today.
