Objection to preaching site

“Surely this is wrong,” said Cr R. S. Lester, when the Riccarton Borough Council last evening gave Mr P. Hickmott permission to conduct Gospel preaching outside the Riccarton Post Office on Thursday late shopping nights. The council granted Mr Hickmott the right to transfer his preaching from a parking lot, at the council’s pleasure and subject to the approval of the Post Office. “Who is going to police this?” asked Cr Lester. “We are passing the buck to the Post Office. This is on one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in Christchurch and one of the busiest roads in the city.” Cr D. A. Anderson, said he understood Mr Hickmott would use Post Office land, but the council could terminate his permit at any time. Cr Lester’s amendment to the by-laws committee recommendation that the question be referred back was defeated.
