Pleas for hostage

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) KARUIZAWA (Japan), February 22. Impassioned pleas by two weeping mothers today failed to dislodge armed Left-wing extremists under police siege at a mountain villa here.

Police brought in the mothers of two of an estimated five gunmen to add weight to their own constant appeals for surrender and the freeing of 31-year-old housewife, Mrs Yasuko Muta, held hostage for the last four days. The only response from the tightly-shuttered and barricaded villa was two shots fired as one of the mothers broadcast from a police armoured car. The extremists, members of an ultra-Left student faction known as the Unified Red Army—dedicated to urban revolution—barricaded themselves in the villa with the caretaker’s wife as hostage after a gin battle with police last Saturday. Two policemen were slightly wounded.

Police said their object at present was a constant war of nerves to wear down the gunmen, who have enough food to last for more than a month.
