Bishopdale
Sir, —The comments of "Resident” concerning Bishopdale’s substandard gimmicks are well justified. These famous firsts which finish as infamous fizzers should be stopped. The ethics of getting personalities to participate by publishing their names first and asking them later may be considered
questionable. The puerility of the latest effort coupled with an assurance of purity in order to defend, probably fictitious. complaints alleged to have been received suggesting poronography is a rather weak attempt to introduce that element. I would like to assure “Resident” that the organisation behind these stunts has by no means the full support of all Bishopdale business houses or even its own declining membership. The few advertisers supporting these so-called promotions in their advertising copy may give substance to the hope that wiser counsels will eventually prevail.— Yours, etc., R. M. NAYSMITH. February 22, 1972. Sir,—ln reply to “Resident of Bishopdale,” might I say that probably many people anl even some businessmen would be pleased to have a progressive businessmen’s association such as we have in our suburb. Perhaps gimmicks are being used, but they are bringing a lot of fun and laughter, not in derision, but in joy, because laughter is missing so much in our lives today. I am pleased to see by our local news sheet that a further promotion is shortly to begin in our shopping centre, namely a "Car Fare,” which I understand is to promote funds for a charity. It is to be hoped that this charity will benefit considerably from this promotion. May I congratulate the Bishopdale Businessmen’s Association and look forward to seeing further gimmicks used to promote Bishopdale as the go-ahead shopping centre in Christchurch.—Yours, etc., A.C.S.
